Apple Unveils iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple Watch and Apple Pay

$

In its annual event on September 9, 2014, Apple unveiled the next generation of iPhones called iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus with bigger 4.7 and 5.5-inch displays.

This is expected but what followed made the event exciting – the launch of a mobile payment system called Apple Pay and the Apple Watch. Apple is finally taking over technologies that rival companies already tried but failed like Google Wallet and the smartwatches by Samsung, LG, Motorola and others.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
Meet the  iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus!

Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

If you’ve been longing for a phablet iPhone, the iPhone 6 Plus is Apple’s answer with its 5.5-inch display with 1920 x 1080 pixels or 401 pixels per inch. On the other hand, the iPhone 6 caters for those who still prefer a more manageable size.

Both devices are powered by a new 64-bit A8 chipset with an M8 co-processor and boasts voice over LTE and Wi-Fi networks!

Sadly, Apple kept the 8MP resolution for the camera. Nevertheless, DSLR technology called Focus Pixels has been added as well as Optical image stabilization for the iPhone 6 Plus.

Apple Watch

Apple Watch with Crown
Apple Watch showing its home screen and how it can be controlled using the crown.

Perhaps the most awaited announcement from Apple is its first wearable device – the Apple Watch. Apple was expected to define what a smartwatch should be and they more than delivered.

The Apple Watch is the best smartwatch to date both in design and function. It runs a very customized OS that can be controlled by touch, voice and a crown – that little knob in your watch that you use to set the time!

Just like other smartwatches, it also has several sensors for tracking health and fitness stats such as heart rate, calorie expenditure and steps you’ve taken.

Moreover, the Apple Watch is capable of communicating to others like sending messages in the form of text, voice, animated emoticons and even by tactile feedback using a combination of subtle vibration and sound effect. You can even send your heart beat!

Apple Pay

Apple Pay
Purchasing using Apple Pay

Google Wallet has been launched for several years now but it has failed to take off. Apple took the challenge of implementing a mobile payment system and called it Apple Pay.

Apple Pay aims to replace credit cards by making payments easier and more secure. The system works using NFC technology to process payments using your iPhone 6 or iWatch.

Apple also partnered with well-known establishments like McDonalds, Nike and Subway to make this possible.

Conclusion

Apple has once again proven its capability at making technology into a form that appeal to the usual consumer. True, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are not very exciting except for the larger displays.

However, the announcement of Apple Pay and the Apple Watch has cemented Apple’s status as the leader in mobile technologies.

Windows 8.1 PC and Tablet in One by Cherry Mobile!

Cherry Mobile Alpha Morph runs on a 1.33GHz quad core Intel Atom processor with an Intel HD Graphics - Gen 7 GPU and 2GB of RAM. This is more than enough for a very smooth Windows 8.1 experience.

Its 10-inch display is only an HD panel (720p) but uses IPS so viewing angles should be good. This screen is probably just around the same quality as your current laptop.

Take note that the Cherry Mobile Alpha Morph runs on a full version of Windows 8.1 – the same as that on your desktop PC. It also comes with a free subscription of Office 365 for a whole year!

Xiaomi Redmi 1S Review

$

I ordered a Xiaomi Redmi 1S from Lazada during its first flash sale on September 4. After 4 days, it arrived here in Cebu and ready to be reviewed.

The Redmi 1S is a 1.6GHz Snapdragon 400 smartphone with a 4.7-inch HD display, an 8MP camera, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage. It runs on MiUI v5 on top of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and sells for ₱5,599 only.

Here’s my Redmi 1S:

Xiaomi Redmi 1S Review
Xiaomi Redmi 1S in the flesh!

The Redmi 1S came in a simple brown box with the Xiaomi logo on one side and details about the handset on the other.  It contains the phone’s charger, quick start guide, an orange colored battery and the unit itself. There was no earphones or headset included.

Design and Build Quality

Xiaomi Redmi 1S Gray Back
The Xiaomi Redmi 1S has a Nokia-like quality.

Even though the Redmi 1S is encased in plastic, the build quality is top notch. The back cover has a slight matte texture and its curved edges give the phone a good grip.

The capacitive buttons below the screen are colored red and don’t light up. That’s the same as the Zenfone 5 and not really an issue for me. The huge bezels are a setback though. It’s about 3mm plus an extra space of about 1mm.

Xiaomi Redmi 1S Sideview
Sideview of the Xiaomi Redmi 1S.

The power and volume buttons are well placed on the right side although I sometimes press the power instead of the volume down. The phone is a bit too smooth that it sometimes slips from my hands. It once hit my nose while I was trying to set up an alarm before sleeping.

Display Quality

A High Definition resolution on a 4.7-inch screen gives the Redmi 1S a very sharp display. Icons, texts and photos look good and it’s very difficult to discern the individual pixels.

Xiaomi Redmi 1S Display Test
Display test for the Xiaomi Redmi 1S.

The screen can also go from very, very dim for night time reading up to its brightest that makes texts easily readable even on direct sunlight. Smudges can accumulate on the screen from time to time but it’s not a big deal and you can easily clean it up.

I also tried to scratch the Dragontrail protected display of my Redmi 1S with some coins, keys and a pair of paper scissors. Those things didn't leave any marks but you shouldn't be too harsh with yours.

The viewing angle of the display is also very good. There is a noticeable gap between the actual screen and the topmost cover because this isn’t OGS. The screen is still very responsive to my touches and swipes though.

Performance

Xiaomi Redmi 1S Antutu Score
Xiaomi Redmi 1S Antutu Score

The Redmi 1S is the first smartphone I know to run on a 1.6GHz quad core Snapdragon 400 processor. Most Snapdragon 400 smartphones only have 1.2GHz clock speed.

This is immediately apparent when you turn on the Redmi 1S. The MiUI v5 user interface also contributes to the smoothness.

The biggest disappointment with the performance of the Redmi 1S is its limited amount of RAM. It has 1GB but only around 400MB is free. This is easily used up by Facebook, Gmail and other apps.

When playing a hard core game like Modern Combat or NBA2k14, I usually try to clean up the RAM first by pressing and holding the Menu button until the recent apps appear together with the memory cleaner.

Benchmarks

Gaming Performance

Xiaomi Redmi 1S Game Performance
Asphalt 8 on a Xiaomi Redmi 1S

Right after taking it out of the box, I immediately played NBA2k14 on my Redmi 1S and what a big disappointment! The game was totally laggy and almost unplayable.

Then a notification that a software update is available popped up. I downloaded the OTA update and that was the solution to my problem.

NBA2k14 turned very smooth after the update. Asphalt 8 in highest display settings also rocked! You can check this video of me playing a few games with the Redmi 1S:

Yeah, forgive the erratic focus and chicken in the background.

Casual games like Swing Copters and Candy Crush Saga are also very smooth on the Redmi 1S. If you experience any lags while playing a game, just press and hold the Menu button to clear the RAM and you should be good to go.

Camera

Xiaomi Redmi 1S Sample Photo
Xiaomi Redmi 1S Sample Photo - Auto mode, 8MP without flash.

The Xiaomi Redmi 1S has an 8MP camera on the back and a 1.6MP Camera on the front. These might not sound too appealing but mind you, the Redmi 1S has one of the best cameras in this price level.

Aside from the high quality pictures and video, the cameras also shoot pictures without any lag in good lighting conditions. During the night, there’s a noticeable processing time as the camera tries to capture more light.

User Interface and Multimedia

Xiaomi Redmi 1S MiUI v5 Screenshots
Xiaomi Redmi 1S MiUI v5 Screenshots

The MiUI user interface of the Redmi 1S looks like that of iPhone’s iOS. However, it’s not really an exact copy and the resulting clean and intuitive user interface is what makes people hooked up with MiUI

Xiaomi has been present with the MiUI ROM for a very long time. That’s why they are very knowledgeable on what makes a good user interface for an Android phone. Even the lack of an app drawer feels alright as long as the interface is smooth, clean and intuitive.

Playing a movie or listening to a song is also a good experience with the Redmi 1S. It can play a 1080p video smoothly but the sound quality of its loudspeaker lacks a sufficient amount of bass. Of course it’s understandable for a phone but it just doesn’t sound that good.

Calls and Texts

Xiaomi Redmi 1S MiUI v5 Screenshots - Messaging app, Dialer and Compass
Messaging app, Dialer and compass of the Xiaomi Redmi 1S.

Let’s not leave out the main function of a phone – make calls and text messages. Once again, the MiUI user interface improved the look of the Messaging app making it neat. There’s also a notification LED just below the home button.

Okay, let me just say this: I love MiUI! When it comes to customized Android UI’s, this is my number one followed by the ZenUI of Asus.

When it comes to voice calls, the quality is just how you expect it to be with a smartphone in this price level. There’s also a subtle noise cancellation that makes the call sound clearer. The Redmi 1S is perfect for recording audio!

Web Browsing and GPS

Xiaomi Redmi 1S GPS Test
Xiaomi Redmi 1S AndroiTS GPS Test

I’ve tried browsing the net on my Redmi 1S via Wi-Fi and 3G data connection. Both connectivity options made browsing comfortably fast for reading the latest news, searching on Google and using Facebook and Instagram.

With some smartphones that I used before, I usually see objects with the {position:fixed} CSS style go erratic. That didn’t happen with the Redmi 1S.

I also tested the phone’s GPS using AndroiTS and it immediately got a lock on 19 out of 25 GPS satellites. It also pin pointed my location even while I’m indoors.

Storage and USB OTG

Xiaomi Redmi 1S USB OTG
Xiaomi Redmi 1S can read USB flash drives.

The Redmi 1S comes with 8GB of internal storage with 5.72GB free for your files like photos, videos and game files. You can’t install apps to the SD card but an update is already available that solves this problem.

I wasn’t able to test if the Redmi 1S can really read 64GB microSD cards. I did have a USB OTG adaptor and checked if the Redmi 1S can read files on my USB flash drive.

After connecting the flash drive, the Redmi 1S immediately recognized it and I was able to play videos and copy file to and from the phone.

Battery and Heating Issue

Xiaomi Redmi 1S Battery
That orange battery!

Playing a 1080p trailer of Jupiter Rising on the Redmi 1S at 50% brightness, 0% volume and with the Airplane mode turned on made it last for 7 hours and 24 minutes before shutting down on its own.

Using it as my main smartphone makes it last around 20-23 hours. This includes occasional web browsing, opening emails, Facebook, a little game time, taking a few photos and using it for SMS and calls.

On the other hand, re-charging the Redmi 1S from zero to 100% battery capacity takes 2 hours and 30 minutes using its own charger.

The Redmi 1S also has a heating issue which is already reported by several users. In my experience, it only happens when I take pictures a lot or shoot a video during the day. The battery temperature on CPU-Z can go up to 45°C in some instances.

I haven’t observed the heating issue while playing a hard core game or using Wi-Fi and 3G. If there was any, it’s manageable. Using Wi-Fi doesn’t even make the battery temperature go up to 35°C.

Where and How to Buy a Redmi 1S and Accessories

Xiaomi Redmi 1S Unboxing
Xiaomi Redmi 1S Unboxing

I’ll repeat this again and again, the Xiaomi Redmi 1S is exclusively available on Lazada. You can’t buy it in the malls or any other place but online. You might be able to find it somewhere but that will surely be above the official price of ₱5,599.

You have to register first before you can buy. Here's a separate post for your guidance.

I ordered mine on September 4 and arrived here in Cebu after 4 days. I also chose the Cash on Delivery option and paid the delivery guy before he gave me the package.

Accessories are also available like the Mi In Ear Earphones, soft case and extra back covers in different colors.

Xiaomi Redmi 1S Review
Xiaomi Redmi 1S - One of the best affordable smartphones in the Philippines

The Redmi 1S is a very good choice given its specs and price. I recommend it for those who are looking for a gaming smartphone with a good camera for social events and clean user interface.

If you are picky when it comes to bezels, heating issue, lack of free earphones and the iPhone-like user interface, this isn’t for you.

Xiaomi has a very active community of developers so the heating and RAM issues should be solved in the coming weeks.

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus: Specs, Features and Price in the Philippines

Just like last year, Apple released two new iPhone models during an event on September 9 at the Flint Center in Cupertino, California – the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The two smartphones are bigger, faster and of course, generally better than the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. However, they also have differences in terms of camera features, battery and obviously, size. Which one should you choose?

Meet the iPhone 6 & 6 Plus:

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus
Big or bigger - which one would you prefer?

Similarities of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Let’s first talk about the similarities between the two new iPhones. First, both are running on a slightly faster 1.4GHz dual core 64-bit Apple A8 processor dubbed as ‘Cyclone’. This is aided by a hexa-core PowerVR GX6650 GPU.

The two will also run on iOS8 out of the box. Your old iPhone can also be updated to iOS 8 but some features like the Apple Pay mobile payment system will only be available on two iPhone 6 and the Apple Watch.

The biggest disappointment is perhaps in the cameras. Both iPhones still have an 8MP camera on the back and a mere 1.2MP on the front. There are improvements in the hardware like ‘Focus Pixels’ for faster autofocus though.

Lastly, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus looks like the iPod Touch. It might not look as sleek as the previous iPhone designs but it certainly helps in making them more comfortable in the hands.

Apple Pay
iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus has a mobile payment system called Apple Pay.

Differences of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Now let’s come to the differences. Let’s start with the display – the larger iPhone 6 Plus has a 1080p resolution while the iPhone 6 has 750p. Clearly, the bigger one has the upper hand in terms of screen resolution but are you okay with using a bigger phone?

Next, the camera of the iPhone 6 might have image stabilization using software techniques but the iPhone 6 Plus has enough room for a camera module that can actually move up and down to compensate for your shaky hands – this is called optical image stabilization.

The iPhone 6 Plus also boasts more RAM at 2GB compared to the 1GB RAM of the iPhone 6 (this remains to be confirmed). It also has better battery capacity that makes it last 3 hours longer during video playback.

Lastly, the iPhone 6 is more affordable than the iPhone 6 Plus. You can get a 16GB iPhone 6 free from any contract for $649 in the US or around ₱30,600. This is likely going to be more expensive here in the Philippines but the larger iPhone 6 Plus will set you back by $749 or around ₱32,800 – that’s a difference of ₱2,200!

Reimagined SKK V2 Looks Like LG G2 with Heart Rate Monitor - Complete Specs and Price

Last month, SKK announced the SKK V2– a quad core Android Kitkat smartphone with 1GB of RAM and supports USB OTG. I even thought it was named SKK Marian V2.

However, the company discontinued that model and announced a re-imagined SKK V2 that comes with a heart rate monitor just like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and looks like the LG G2 with all the buttons on the back!

Take a look at the new SKK V2:

SKK V2
Notice the LG G2 like buttons and the very thin bezels of the SKK V2.

Placing your finger on the heart rate monitor just beside the rear camera will let it count your heartbeat. The SKK V2 is the first locally branded smartphone to have this feature!

There is a very obvious similarity in the new SKK V2’s design with that of the LG G2. In fact, the power button, camera and volume buttons on the back of the SKK V2 are exact copycats of the LG G2.

SKK recently launched the SKK X4 which has a very similar design with the Oppo N1. Is this SKK’s new strategy – to copy the designs of other smartphones?

SKK V2 LG G2 knock-off
LG G2 and Samsung Galaxy S5 in one?

This might be a good thing because those who can’t afford an Oppo N1 or LG G2 can buy an SKK product and experience these innovative designs and features. Are you okay with this?Share your thoughts in the comments.

The SKK V2 has a 5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels. It runs on Android 4.4 kitkat using a 1.3GHz quad core processor from MediaTek with 1GB of RAM and a Mali-400 MP2 graphics processor.

It also boasts a set of gesture controls such as Air Browse, Air-call Accept, Smart Screen or Eye Gesture, Palm Motion and Quick Gesture Entry.

SKK V2 Gestures

The SKK V2 comes with 3G HSPA+ connectivity as well as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and FM Radio. It has 8GB of internal storage with up to 64GB of microSD card storage. However, it doesn't support USB OTG.

It's battery is rated 2,500mAh and even has an E-compass.

SKK V2 will be available this month for only ₱4,999. This price will surely make it very interesting!

  • 5.0-Inch IPS Display (540 x 960 Pixels)

Android One Smartphones Launched! Coming Soon in the Philippines...

$

During Google’s launch of the first Android One smartphones in India, the Philippines was mentioned as one of several countries where the project will hit next.

Android One is a partnership between Google and manufacturers where a reference design is used to create entry level smartphones having the same specifications and compatible with the latest version of Android.

Android One Smartphone
Android One Smartphone from Micromax - the Canvas V1.

The first three Android One smartphones are the Micromax Canvas V1, Karbonn Sparkle V and Spice Dream UNO. The prices range from ₱4,500 to ₱4,650 based on current foreign exchange rates.

All three Android One smartphone run on Android 4.4.4 Kitkat using a 1.3GHz quad core processor from MediaTek, Mali-400 MP2 GPU, 1GB of RAM and 1,700mAh battery with a 4.5-inch 854 x 480 pixel display, 5MP main camera and 2MP front snapper.

The most interesting part is that local brands in the Philippines like MyPhone has been ‘re-branding’ smartphones from Micromax and Cherry Mobile from Karbonn. Hence, we might see the Canvas V1 in MyPhone kiosks in the next months!

Android One Hardware
A shared hardware - all Android One smartphones share the same specs.

Other smartphone OEM’s like Lenovo, Asus, Acer and Alcatel are also working on their Android One smartphones. Perhaps an Android One Asus Zenfone running on Android 4.4.4 Kitkat is already in the works?

However, there are disadvantages with the Android One smartphones too. For example, they only have a 1,700mAh battery while current smartphones in this price level boast 2,000mAh batteries and above. The 5MP camera is also inferior to the 8MP cameras of the MyPhone Rio or the Cherry Mobile Flare S2.

For sure, the best feature of Android One smartphones is its direct support from Google. They will immediately receive OTA updates when a new version of Android is out. I know a lot of Android users who would like to use an Android L smartphone without the high price of flagship devices.

Android One Smartphones Specifications

  • 4.5-Inch IPS Display (854 x 480 Pixels, 218 ppi)

SKK Mobile posted a photo on its Facebook page comparing the Antutu Benchmark scores of the SKK Phoenix X1 with that of two other smartphones. Despite the blurred logo, it’s clear that the other smartphones are the competing octa core Cherry Mobile Pulse and MyPhone Infinity Lite. SKK has surprised me with its latest offerings like the X4 and V2 but I don’t like what they did. Here’s the photo:
