Super Performance!

Starmobile recently posted a screenshot of an AnTuTu Benchmark score showing a whooping 21,947 score. That's almost the same score as a Samsung Galaxy S4!

After examining the image, it's obvious that the device is a tablet based on the on screen buttons at the bottom. The size of the image also tells us that it has a screen resolution of 768 x 1024 Pixels - nice one if this one is a 7 inch or 8 inch gadget.

Starmobile's New Tablet Scores 21,947 on AnTuTu Benchmark

The identity of the tablet is anyone's guess right now. But these are the highly plausible specs:

  • Quad Core Processor
  • 768 x 1024 Pixel Display
  • Call and Text Function (one of the icons in the notification bar looks like an SMS icon)

We'll update this when new info comes out.

Nokia Lumia 1520: First Ever 6-Inch Windows Phone Packs Snapdragon 800 and a 20MP PureView Camera

A Nokia Lumia Phablet

For the first time, Windows Phone has gone into the phablet space dominated by Samsung's Galaxy Note in the form of Nokia Lumia 1520.

Aside from Nokia Lumia 1520's powerful 2.2GHz quad core processor and 20MP camera, it's also the first Windows phone to feature a 1080p display. Previous Nokia Lumias were limited to 720p by the Windows Phone software.

Take a look at Nokia Lumia 1520:

Nokia Lumia 1520: Perfect for Productivity

Nokia Storyteller AppNokia Lumia 1520's large display makes it perfect for productivity on the go. That's what Nokia market's the phablet for.

That's why Nokia also included the Nokia Storyteller app that can create videos based on your locations and photos that you took there using the 20MP Pureview camera with ZEISS optics.

Add to that the usual Microsoft applications like Word, Powerpoint, OneNote and Excel.

Nokia Lumia 1520 Camera: Why Not 41MP?

One feature that seemed not so good with Nokia Lumia 1520 is its 20MP camera since Nokia Lumia 1020 has 41MP which is unchallenged up to now.

One reason is that Nokia Lumia 1520 focuses more on innovations in the software side. It has the sought after Pro and Smart camera combined into a single app and more improvements as a result of Windows Phone OS' GDR3 update.

Another reason is: heck, 20 MP is still awesome!

Nokia Lumia 1520 Network and Connectivity

As expected, Nokia Lumia 1520 features LTE network connectivity. However, you might want to check with Smart or Globe first because their working LTE band isn't listed on Nokia Lumia 1520's specs.

But don't worry, you'll have a quad band 3G network connectivity as backup.

Nokia Lumia 1520 also supports usual connectivity ports like micro USB, 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, NFC and of course, WiFi. It even has WiFi channel bonding feature that allows you to connect to multiple WiFi networks at the same time to increase your internet connection speed.

You might also like Lumia 1520's wireless charging capability :)

Nokia Lumia 1520 Price and Availability

As of now, there's no official price for Nokia Lumia 1520 in the Philippines. However, its $750 unlocked price in the US puts it at around ₱32,200 using BSP's current exchange rate.

If you're eager to know when Nokia Lumia 1520 hits the stores, you can sign up on Nokia.com or like us on Facebook.

Apple's Latest Operating System, OS X Mavericks Now Free!

iWork and iLife Apps are Free too!

Apple surprised us by announcing that upgrading your Mac to OS X Mavericks is free of charge. It used to cost around $30 or ₱1200 to upgrade. Even iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are also free!

This move from Apple will forever change its operating system war with Microsoft. Just compare this to $199 or ₱8,000 when you upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro.

OS X Mavericks: Free with Over 200 New Features

iBooksIf you're thinking like, "yeah it's free but will it really change anything on a Mac?" Apple see to it that it has a lot of new services to offer with OS X Mavericks.

Some of the most notable are the introduction of iBooks and Maps to the Mac. The two were previously available on iPhones and iPads only.

There's also the password manager iCloud Keychain that uses 256-bit AES encryption to protect your passwords and credit card information protected and available across all your trusted devices.

Who Can and How to Upgrade

Now I'm thinking, "if OS X Mavericks is free, can I download and install it on a PC?" Bad luck. That's not possible right now. OS X Mavericks works on Macs only. Even Macs older than 2007 can't run this operating system.

Of course, others will try and create another 'hackintosh' but it will be difficult. Apple's move to make this free means that it's going to take its revenue from something else - that's the pricey hardware.

If you own a Mac currently running the latest version of Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion, just open the About this Mac window and upgrade from there.

iPad Air: Thinner and Lighter

Apple's newest iPad, iPad Air is 28% lighter and 20% thinner compared to iPad 4. It's amazing how Apple reduced the physical dimensions of the iPad while retaining its battery life and increasing its power.

Just like iPhone 5S, iPad Air uses a 64-bit A7 chip that is so efficient enabling it to take on a thinner and lighter body. But don't worry, despite its thinness, iPad Air was dropped in a video but its retina display didn't even blink.

Take a look at the gorgeous iPad Air:

iPad Air Official Specs, Price and New Features
iPad Air looks beautiful - just as any Apple product.

iPad Air Performance

iPad Air 3DThe 64-bit chip inside iPad Air doesn't just reduce its physical dimensions, it also increases its performance just as 64-bit chips do with desktop computers. Playing high definition 3D games is so smooth with the iPad Air that you can even make 3D models on it.

There's also an additional M7 coprocessor which will gather data from iPad Air's different sensors to make apps give you a better experience.

For the battery life, iPad Air still retains its 10 hours of battery life. No problem with that one.

iPad Air Retina Display and Camera

iPad Air CameraWith thinner bezels, iPad Air will give you more screen size at a lesser body size. iPad Air's retina display measures 9.7 inches and has a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels! That's 3.1 million pixels overall or 264 pixels per inch.

Both the 1.2MP front camera and 5MP iSight camera at the back has been greatly improved with the use of next generation backside illuminated sensors.

Apple boasts the automatic adjustment that the A7 chip does to create high quality photos without the user thinking what settings to use.

iPad Air Networks and Connectivity

"iPad Air is the first iOS device to support MIMO", Apple's Senior VP for Hardware Engineering said in iPad Air's video. MIMO is the use of multiple antennas to increase data transfer on wireless networks such as WiFi.

Both the WiFi only and Cellular version of iPad Air supports Bluetooth 4.0. More importantly, iPad Air also supports 14 LTE bands including the one used by Smart and Globe.

Of course, expect a slightly higher price when iPad Air becomes available through the different online stores in the country.

iPad Mini Gets Retina Display, iPhone 5S Processor and Faster WiFi

iPad Mini's Stunning Display

Apple's new iPad Mini features a 7.9 inch 2048 x 1536 Pixel Retina display that makes it sharper than an HDTV!

Its one of the most requested features and Apple happily gave into it but with consequences - a slight increase of 0.3mm in thickness. That's nothing compared to its "desktop class" processor, faster WiFi and FREE apps.

iPad Mini with iPhone 5S Processor

iPad Mini with Retina Display WhiteiPad Mini skipped a generation of processor from A5 to A7. That's the same 64-bit processor on iPhone 5S. Apple tagged it as "desktop class" and improves the performance of apps. There's also an M7 coprocessor that monitors the sensors but with a lower power requirement.

The additional processing power has no detrimental effect on battery life, Apple promised. It still has up to 10 hours of normal usage before needing a re-charge.

iPad Mini's Faster WiFi with MIMO Support, Cellular Networks and Connectivity

One of the new features on iPad Mini and the full size iPad Air is the dual band WiFi that uses two antennas for faster data transfer. This technology is called MIMO which is short for multiple-input and multiple-output.

The iPad Mini with Cellular supports a lot of LTE bands including those used by Smart and Globe. You always have 3G and 2G as backup but the expanding LTE coverage in the country needs to be taken advantaged too.

There's not much change with connectivity features. You have Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS, Digital Compass, video out to Apple TV and lightning.

iPad Mini with Retina Display Official Specs

  • 64-Bit A7 Processor with M7 Coprocessor
  • 7.9 Inch Retina Display with 2048 x 1536 Resolution or 326 PPI
  • iOS 7 Operating System

iPad Mini with Retina Display is available win two colors: Space Gray and Silver. You also have the option on Cellular capability and the amount of internal storage.

The WiFi only version of the iPad Mini with 16 GB of internal storage has the lowest price at $399. Yeah, that's too expensive but you'll have retina display for that.

You'll also have iWork and iLife apps for free.

Perfect for Selfies

If you're looking for a smartphone with an 8 Megapixel FRONT camera with flash, Cherry Mobile Omega XL is perfect for you. It's even autofocus to prevent blurry selfies.

Aside from taking selfies, Cherry Mobile Omega XL is perfect for media consumption too. It has a huge 6 inch display protected from scratches by Dragontrail glass. Too bad, that's too big for me.

Cherry Mobile Omega XL Performance

When it comes to performance, Cherry Mobile Omega XL is powered by a 1.2GHz quad core processor. It's probably MediaTek MT6589 with PowerVR SGX544 for graphics .

It's 1GB of RAM ensures that you'll always have room for running a lot of apps. The 4GB internal storage space begs for a micro SD slot. I'm confident that it will have one for a 32GB memory card.

Omega XL's battery capacity hasn't been revealed yet but the free powerbank suggests that it has a small mAh rating. That's not good considering its 6 inch screen.

Cherry Mobile Omega XL Display and Camera

Cherry Mobile Omega XL's 6 inch display should provide sharp graphics with IPS technology. The screen resolution is not yet revealed but Cherry Mobile must put at least an HD panel for this one.

The cameras of Cherry Mobile Omega XL is its main attraction. It's main camera is a 13 Megapixel shooter with Backside Illuminated sensor for excellent low light pictures and a single LED flash.

For the front camera, an LED flash will ensure that you'll have high quality selfies even in your dark room with its 8 Megapixel sensor.

Cherry Mobile Omega XL Network and Connectivity

Omega XL can connect to 3G networks up to 21Mbps download speed. EDGE and GPRS are also available. If you're looking for an LTE Cherry Mobile phone, take a look at W900 LTE.

You'll also have dual sim capability and WiFi. Bluetooth and GPRS should also be present.

Cherry Mobile Omega XL Specs

This list of specs includes unofficial but highly probabable features of Cherry Mobile Omega XL.

First ever LTE phone in PH?

Cherry Mobile W900 LTE isn't the first LTE capable smartphone in the Philippines. But, it's the first from a local brand and with a price tag of ₱11,499 only.

After a leak last week, Cherry Mobile officially launched the W900 LTE on its Facebook page with a screenshot of its Speedtest.net score at a whooping 20 Mbps download speed!

Cherry Mobile W900 LTE Official Specs, Price and Speedtest Score
Cherry Mobile W900 Official Photo from Cherry Mobile.

Cherry Mobile W900 LTE's LTE Performance

LTE or Long Term Evolution allows faster data transfer speed compared to 3G. Based on the screenshot provided by Cherry Mobile, W900 LTE can achieve speeds up to 20 Mbps and 3 Mbps for download and upload respectively.

The test was done with a Smart LTE sim and the result is actually the same with the findings of Michael Josh Villanueva during his Good LTE hunting adventure.

Smart promises up to 42Mbps but that will be about 10-20 Mbps in reality due to different factors.

Cherry Mobile W900 LTE Hardware Performance

There's a similarly priced Nokia Lumia 625 with LTE capability too but Cherry Mobile W900 LTE's hardware is way above that Lumia.

Cherry Mobile W900 LTE is powered by a 1.5GHz dual core processor from Qualcomm. It's probably MSM8926 with Adreno 225 graphics processor.

There's also 1 GB of RAM for running multiple apps smoothly and 8 GB of internal storage for music, photo and file storage.

Cherry Mobile W900 LTE Display and Camera

Cherry Mobile W900 LTE boasts a One Glass Solution (OGS) display. It's a technology that makes touchscreens thinner, lighter and clearer.

This OGS display measures 4.3 inches diagonally with a high definition resolution of 1280 x 720 Pixels. That's around 342 pixels per inch - a very good pixel density. Texts, photos, videos and other graphics will surely look gorgeous on this screen.

There's a 12 Megapixel camera at the back with a backside illuminated sensor that'll ensure high quality photos even in low light.

Check out the spec sheet below for more!

Cherry Mobile W900 LTE Specs

  • 1.5GHz Dual Core Qualcomm Snapdragon Processor
  • Android Jelly Bean
  • 4.3 Inch OGS HD Display at 1280 x 720 Pixels or 342 PPI
  • 10 Point Muti-touch
  • Adreno 225 GPU (to be confirmed)

  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 8 GB Internal Storage
  • Single Sim
  • WiFi and WiFi Hotspot
  • 4G LTE, 3G HSPA+, EDGE, GPRS and GSM Networks

Cherry Mobile W900 LTE Price and Freebies

When you buy a Cherry Mobile W900 LTE for ₱11,499, you'll also have a free Cherry Mobile power bank. This means that the battery of W900 LTE is somewhat low.

The free power bank is a good thing. Using its LTE feature, Cherry Mobile W900 LTE will drain its battery faster than on 3G.

How to Use Facebook For Free Using Globe or TM

Free FB, No WiFi Needed!

Globe Telecom recently launched a partnership with Facebook to offer the social media for free to its subscribers. It doesn't matter weather you use the Facebook App or your mobile browser.

However, many Globe and TM users complained that their load was still used up when they browsed Facebook. Hence, I decided to put up a definitive, step-by-step guide on how to use Facebook for free using a Globe or TM sim card.

How to Use Facebook For Free Using Globe or TM
"Free Data" appears above the Android Facebook app when using Globe or TM's Free Facebook access.

Step 1: Register for Globe Free Facebook Access

Using a cellphone with a Globe or TM sim, dial *143# and press the call button. A menu will appear enumerating 10 options. Choose Free FB by typing 2 and then press Send.

Another menu will appear with the statement "Libre ang Facebook sa Globe or TM! Post, Like at Chat sa cellphone! No WiFi needed!" Choose Start Now by typing 1 and then press Send.

You will then receive an SMS with a link to m.facebook.com/free. DON'T click that link yet. If you do that and you're not connected to a WiFi network, you might be charged.

Step 2: Configure Your Mobile Data Access

Restrict Background DataIn order to access Facebook for free, you must first have some sort of mobile data connection. If you're on prepaid like most of us, make sure you have the following APN settings:

Name: myGlobeInet
APN: http.globe.com.ph

This one is for Android phones:
Before you turn on your mobile internet, be aware that other apps can run in the background and access the internet without your knowledge. You MUST DISABLE them before you incur additional data charges.

To do so, go to Settings > Data Usage then tap the menu button and check Restrict background data.

If you turn on your mobile data right now, it will display G, E or H in the status bar depending on the signal in your area.

Step 3: Activate Globe Free Facebook for Your Account

Free Data Globe TMThis promo of Globe is integrated with Facebook. You have to provide Globe access to the information found in your Facebook account and Globe will then share your balance status with Facebook.

With your Mobile Data enabled, click the link on the SMS that you received or point your browser to m.facebook.com/free. You'll be prompted to login to Facebook first and you should do so.

You'll then be presented with the screenshot on the right (or top if you're reading this on your phone). Tap the Start button and you'll start enjoying Facebook for free.

Step 4: Enjoy Facebook for Free But... How Do They Make Money with This?

Facebook Standard Data Charges ApplyThat's the question that crossed my mind the first time I heard this very generous offer from Globe. It's a totally free access to Facebook. You can chat, view full sized photos unlike Facebook 0.

I'm not a Globe or TM subscriber so I bought a TM sim card for 20 Pesos - and that's one way that they make money out of this. Many will now consider switching to Globe because there's free Facebook!

Another is when you already use the service. If you click a link that will lead you outside of Facebook, you'll be warned that you might incur data charges. But, along with the warning is the offer to LOAN 10MB of data for 10 pesos. What a clever way to lure customers!

Cherry Mobile Superion Voyager: 8 Inch Android Tablet with Call and Text Functions

$

Cherry Mobileteased us with two Superion tablets almost 3 weeks ago. Both has call and text functions while one has a larger 8 inch display - that's the Cherry Mobile Superion Voyager.

My friends, if you are looking for a good Android tablet that you can also use to send text messages and make calls for only ₱4,999, Cherry Mobile Superion Voyager is for you!

Here's how Cherry Mobile Superion Voyager looks like:

Cherry Mobile Superion Voyager: 8 Inch Android Tablet with Call and Text Functions
Cherry Mobile Superion Voyager. Photo by Cherry Mobile

Cherry Mobile Superion Voyager Performance

Since Superion tablets are more focused on additional functions instead of more processing power, the lower specs on Cherry Mobile Superion Voyager is expected.

It runs on a 1GHz dual core processor and 512MB of RAM. That's a bit low but absolutely capable of running your favorite games like Candy Crush Saga or productivity apps like Google's Quick Office.

Cherry Mobile Superion Voyager has a 3,500 mAh Li-ion battery that can last up to a day with normal usage. Constant gaming will surely drain this battery after 4-5 hours.

Cherry Mobile Superion Voyager Design, Display and Camera

Cherry Mobile Superion Voyager is certainly not that thin at 10.85mm but its XGA display promises good graphics. That's 768 x 1024 Pixels or 168 pixels per inch.

It has two cameras but with 2MP and 0.3MP resolutions only for the back and front respectively. Don't expect to take high quality photos with these cameras. But, these two should be sufficient for video calling using Skype.

Giraffe Riddle Answers - Don't Change Your Profile Picture!

A Riddle that took Facebook by Storm

It made me curious why many of my Facebook friends changed their Facebook profile picture into a giraffe lately. I read the comments and found out about the Giraffe Riddle.

The riddle actually started from a Youtube video posted by video blogger Andrew Strugnell. He gave a riddle that people need to answer correctly or change their profile picture into a giraffe as a consequence.

Giraffe Riddle on Facebook
Screenshot of the Giraffe Riddle Facebook page.

The Giraffe Riddle goes like this:

It’s 3am, the doorbell rings and you wake up. Unexpected visitors!
It’s your parents and they are here for breakfast.
You have strawberry jam, honey, wine, bread and cheese.

What is the first thing you open?

There are two accepted answers for the Giraffe Riddle.

  1. Eyes - you were sleeping and you woke up therefore opening your eyes first.
  2. Door - you were already awake so you either open the door of your room or of your house to let your visitors in.

Due to the popularity of the riddle, Strugnell said he will post another riddle every Saturday. I'm sick of the giraffes on Facebook so please answer the riddle correctly. I didn't receive the riddle and I'm not bound by the deal of not posting the answer.

Top 10 New Features of Android 4.4 Kitkat

New Flavor of Android, Better Features

Google's Android team officially announced the new features of Android version 4.4 Kitkat today. Most of the features are not surprising due to several leaks but the list is still impressive.

I picked 10 new features of Android 4.4 Kitkat that I think are the most important updates Google made on its mobile operating system.

Top 10 New Features of Android 4.4 Kitkat

1. Hands Free Voice Control

We've seen it coming with Moto X. Android 4.4 Kitkat now supports voice command without the need to touch your phone first. You just say "OK Google" and it will launch voice search.

However, you need to be on the home screen (available on Nexus 5 only) or on Google Now to benefit from this. Support for other devices may follow later with upgraded hardware.

2. Full Screen Mode without the Status Bar

Android 4.4 Kitkat can take advantage of your screen - all of it. You can hide the status bar to allow apps to take the entire screen and then swipe again to reveal the status bar.

3. Enhanced Calling Features

Android 4.4 Kitkat has an enhanced phone app that allows you to search for nearby people and places. This is very useful for people looking for services and also for business owners who want more exposure.

The new phone app also makes a list of your most talked to contacts and put them at the top. When an unknown person calls you, it searches Google Maps for listings of local businesses that match with the unknown number.

4. Integrated SMS and MMS with Hangouts

If you're fond of using Hangouts on your phone, this is for you. Your SMS and MMS are now integrated with the Hangouts app such that you can see all your messages in there no matter where it came from.

Of course, they should add support for messages from other apps for this to be really great. Imagine having all your messages from Facebook, WeChat, Kakao Talk, BBM and SMS all in one place!

5. Native Emoji Support

Yeah, those cute smileys are now integrated with the Android Keyboard. This isn't really a big surprise since many replacement keyboards already support Emoji and Android was just waiting next in line

6. Faster Switching Between Apps

Android 4.4 Kitkat managed to optimized memory usage and touchscreen responsiveness. This means better multitasking for those who open a lot of apps and then switch back and forth between them.

7. Native Online Printing and Cloud Storage Support

This is a very useful new feature with Android 4.4 Kitkat. You can now print your documents on the go using Google Cloud Print. Just connect your printer to Google Cloud Print (here's how) and you can then print using that printer as long as both the printer and your phone are connected to the internet.

Android 4.4 Kitkat's file explorer also supports opening and saving files on different cloud storage services like Google Drive and Dropbox now.

8. Bluetooth MAP and Chromecast Support

Bluetooth Message Access Profile (MAP) allows your phone to exchange messages with a car that also has Bluetooth.

Chromecast on the other hand allows you to display content from your phone to a TV wirelessly using a Chromecast device that you can buy for $35 here.

9. Longer Music Playback and Seeking from Lock Screen

Android 4.4 Kitkat takes advantage of the low power processor on the Nexus 5 that can play music longer - up to 60 hours!

You can also seek to any part of a song on the lock screen. That's if you can take your eyes off the full screen album art.

10. App Sandboxing

The official Android website just used one sentence for this new feature on Android 4.4 Kitkat but I needs more attention. Many users install apps that could harm their phone and without sandboxing all they can do is wait and see if the app has detrimental effect to the phone.

It's the first time that Android provided sandboxing feature for its apps. It's the same as Samsung's Knox that uses Security-Enhanced Linux to enforce security protocols on a app.

There you have it - my top 10 new features of Android 4.4 Kitkat. Check out the full list of new features here.

O+ Goes Phablet!

O+ USA’s new flagship device takes on a new size at 5.7 inches – the O+ 8.16 Android Phablet. That’s almost an inch larger than O+ 8.15 at almost the same price tag of ₱12,995.

O+ 8.16 aims to compete with affordable phablets from other local phone companies. Can it win a lot of customers? Its features will determine its fate!

O+ 8.16 Specs, Price and Features: 5.7 Inch Quad Core Phablet
O+ 8.16 – a 5.7 inch phablet that will challenge other locally branded phablets.

O+ 8.16 Performance

O+ 8.16 is powered by a 1.2GHz quad core processor from MediaTek with a PowerVR SGX 544MP graphics processor. Add 1GB of RAM to that and you’ll have a powerful phablet for your favorite apps and games. An AnTuTu Benchmark test of O+ 8.16 revealed a score of more than 13k.

There’s just one detail that makes me worried with O+ 8.16 – its battery. With a capacity of 2,500 mAh, the Li-ion battery might prove insufficient for the huge display of this phone especially if you use it constantly for gaming.

O+ 8.16 Design, Display and Camera

O+ 8.16 is ergonomically designed making it still easy to hold despite its large size. It also has a matte back cover for a better grip.

The 5.7 inch screen displays high quality, brilliant graphics with HD resolution. One thing that you easily notice after turning on the O+ 8.16 is the signature O+ wallpaper and custom icons.

For the taking photos, there’s a 13 Megapixel main camera and a 2 Megapixel front camera both with Backside Illuminated (BSI) sensors.

O+ 8.16 Air Shuffle Feature, Networks and Connectivity

O+ phones come with Air Shuffle– a gesture control technology that allows you to take photos, control music playback and others by waving your palm in front of the device. Aside from Air Shuffle, O+ 8.16 also has Flip to Silent and Shake to Answer or Hang-Up Call features. You can even import and export text messages without any additional app.

O+ 8.16 is a dual sim phablet that can connect to 3G networks for fast mobile internet. There’s always EDGE and GPRS to fall back when 3G isn’t available in your area.

Another nice feature of O+ 8.16 is its USB On the Go (USB OTG) feature that allows you to connect USB flash drives, USB keyboard and other additional peripherals.

O+ 8.16 Official Specs

  • 1.2GHz Quad Core MT6589T Processor

O+ 8.16 Price and Freebies

O+ 8.16 sells for ₱12,995 (suggested retail price) and includes a free 8 GB micro SD card. You also get nice looking earphones and mobile charger in white with red accent.

Google and LG’s Nexus 5– the first Android phone to run on Android 4.4 Kitkat made its debut today. With its amazing specs and features straight from Google, Nexus 5 is a very attractive smartphone.

Pre-orders for Nexus 5 on Google Play and other outlets started for a relatively cheap price - $349 for the 16GB version. That’s ₱ 15,000 when converted using BSP’s exchange rate. However, Nexus phones have the history of being sold at a higher price here in the Philippines.

Google Nexus 5 Price in the Philippines

Google Nexus 5If the case Google Nexus 4 is to be considered, Nexus 5 might also suffer the same fate. Many retailers sold Nexus 4 at a higher price compared to its US price. Instead of ₱15,000, Nexus 4 retailed for as much as ₱24,500!

LG will distribute the Nexus 5 in the Philippines. We’ll update this article when the company releases the official suggested retail price in the coming weeks. Read on to find a way how to get a Nexus 5 for a lower price tag.

Where to Buy Google Nexus 5 in the Philippines

There are several ways how you can buy a Nexus 5 in the Philippines. You can get it from several online shops, Globe and Smart Plans, LG outlets and other stores. However, you have to choose carefully so that you’ll only pay almost the same price in the US.

Kimstore always offer gadgets with a lower price tag (after a price drop, right now it's ₱26k) so you might want to follow their Facebook page. Other online shops, LG outlets and other stores will surely sell Nexus 5 based on the SRP from LG so expect a higher price tag.

If you’re looking for a postpaid plan, Globe and Smart will take more than a month before they can offer Nexus 5. If you can’t wait, better look for other ways.

Lastly, you can ask a friend who is in the US to buy a Nexus 5 for you. However, make sure that he or she can get an international version since the US version lacks LTE band no. 3 which is used by Globe.

Update: Nexus 5 just sold out on Google Play. You can check Amazon if they still have Nexus 5 in stock.

Motorola's Project Ara to Create Smartphones with Replaceable Parts

Do It Yourself Smartphone, You Like?

As if Moto X with customizable colors wasn't enough, Google's Motorola has teamed up with Phonebloks to create a 'modular' smartphone. Motorola calls it the Project Ara.

Project Ara plans to create an endoskeleton where the modules like the battery, camera, processor or a sensor can be attached to. The resulting design looks like something taken from a Windows 8 Start Screen.

Project Ara Concept
The Project Ara concept. Photo by Motorola.

On the other hand, Phonebloks has been working on the concept too. What they came up was sort of a 'lego style phone'.

With the Phonebloks concept, the modules are called bloks and attach to a base that looks like a plastic with a lot of holes in it. This looks cool but Motorola's concept looks better and more technically feasible.

Phonebloks also developed the concept of a Blokstore that can be thought of as the Playstore for hardware. Need a better camera? Purchase a 41MP camera blok from the Blokstore!

Phonebloks Concept
The Phonebloks concept.

One comment that I encountered is that most smartphone users doesn't really care about the hardware on their device as long as they have a good experience with it. For example, it doesn't matter if you have a dual core or quad core processor as long as you don't experience lag issues.

Contrary to that, I do care about the specs of my phone. That might be because I am inclined to gadgets and this sort of stuff.

Project Ara is like building a custom PC using a motherboard, video card, system unit case, monitor and other parts from various brands that you like.

DIY fans will surely like Project Ara and Phonebloks but I'm not sure with regular smartphone users.

iPhone 5C-ish Poster

Remember the colorful iPhone 5C? Cherry Mobile just used the same colorful concept with a poster of a new smartphone called Cherry Mobile Jelly.

The poster looks cute and Cherry Mobile Jelly has plenty of sweet features for a low price (as always with Cherry Mobile products). Take a look:

Cherry Mobile Jelly poster looks like iPhone 5C
A colorful group of Cherry Mobile Jelly phones on the left looks like a group of iPhone 5C's.

Cherry Mobile Jelly Features

Cherry Mobile Jelly is another affordable Android Jelly Bean smartphone with a 3.5 inch screen. Our list of these phones is likely to continue expanding as other brands also offer similar models.

The most outstanding feature of Cherry Mobile Jelly is its Mobile TV. It's an analog receiver so don't expect crystal clear reception. Nevertheless, Mobile TV on a dual core Android Jelly Bean smartphone is a steal with its ₱2,299 price tag.

Cherry Mobile Jelly also has an average quality camera at 5 Megapixels and 0.3MP for the front. All the usual connectivity features are present too - WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS.

I have a hunch that Cherry Mobile Jelly has 512 MB of RAM only (or lower) since Cherry Mobile isn't revealing it no matter how we ask on Facebook. Don't worry about the battery, that won't be a problem with a small screen.

Cherry Mobile Jelly Official Specs

  • 1.2GHz Dual Core MediaTek Processor
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS
  • 3.5 Inch Capacitive Display
  • 5 Megapixel Main Camera
  • VGA Front Camera
  • Expandable up to 32GB via MicroSD
  • Dual Sim
  • WiFi and WiFi Hotspot
  • Bluetooth

We'll update this once we get the complete specs including the RAM, Internal Storage and battery capacity of Cherry Mobile Jelly. You can also leave a comment if you know.

How to Prepare for the Shift to Digital TV Broadcast in the Philippines

$

0
You might have to say goodbye to your current TV as ABS-CBN, GMA and TV5 stop their analog TV broadcast and switch to digital. That's if your television doesn't support digital broadcast based on Japan's ISDB-T standard.

The President already gave the go signal for the National Telecommunications Commission to proceed with the shift. Don't worry, he also said that Filipinos must not pay more than ₱1,000 in order to adapt to this digital TV broadcast.

ISDB-T Digital TV Receiver
ISDB-T Digital TV Broadcast receiver from Japan.

Use of Set-Top Boxes or Receivers

Instead of buying a new TV that is compatible with Japan's ISDB-T digital TV broadcast standard, you can buy a set-top box or receiver that the government might subsidize so that it will cost less than ₱1,000.

The photo above is an example of a set-top box. You will need to connect this receiver to your TV using its auxiliary input jacks - that's also where you plug in the wire from your DVD player.

This is a better option than buying a new TV. There's also an issue with our adoption with the Japanese standard - we can only buy compatible TV sets from Japanese brands! On the positive side, Japanese products are better than the ones from China.

Better Reception for Mobile TV

If you have a cellphone with mobile TV, check from its specs if it is compatible with ISDB-T. Starmobile's Engage 7 TV is an Android tablet which is compatible with the digital TV broadcast in the country.

Digital Broadcast testing by ABS-CBN proves that it does improve picture quality for mobile TV even if the signal is weak. However, if the signal is very, very weak, the screen will go blank. So it's either a clear picture or nothing at all.

There are also mobile TV dongles that you can connect to your mobile phone but I haven't seen one yet.

Made to Prevent Casualties in Disasters

The main reason why the President pushed this move forward is its benefit for disaster risk reduction and management. Since digital TV broadcast can send clear pictures even in remote areas, Filipinos can be better informed about typhoons and other calamities.

The rise in mobile devices capable of receiving digital TV broadcast also paves the way of information dissemination even during a blackout. As long as you've charged your Android tablet with mobile TV, you can still watch the news for the latest weather update.

You can also continue following your favorite TV show despite the heavy rain and ravishing winds :)
