We've previously written about the MyPhone Rio LTE listing on MyPhone’s website. Now, MyPhone has made it official with an affordable price of₱6,499 only.
As expected, MyPhone Rio LTE has a 1.3GHz quad core processor, Android 4.4 Kitkat OS, 4.5-inch display and a 5MP camera.
Some people are not happy with the MyPhone Rio LTE. They point out the mediocre camera and smaller screen size compared to the 5-inch original MyPhone Rio.
However, it is already a good deal for its price. But we hope MyPhone can at least upgrade the camera to 8MP or the front camera to 5MP so that you can upload great selfies at blazing 4G LTE speed!
There’s no word yet on when the MyPhone Rio LTE will be available. The poster says it’s just a limited edition though.

Cherry Mobile Amber 2 ‘Quad Core Android 4.4 Kitkat Smartphone for ₱3,299’ Specs and Features
Cherry Mobile Amber 2 is one of the five new Android phones on the Cherry Mobile Future of Mobile poster.
It’s a huge step from the first Amber which was a dual core Android Jelly Bean smartphone. Cherry Mobile Amber 2 now has a 1.3GHz quad core processor and Android 4.4.2 Kitkat OS out of the box for only a ₱300 increase in SRP.
Cherry Mobile Amber 2 uses the MediaTek MT6582 chipset which is the same as the one on the MyPhone Rio Lite and Cherry Mobile Flare 3– both priced a Peso less than ₱4,000.
One disadvantage of the Cherry Mobile Amber 2 is that it only has 512MB of RAM. Nevertheless, its Android 4.4 Kitkat OS will make it operate smoothly in terms of the user interface. Hard core games would be another story though.
It still has the 4-inch display of the first Amber with the same resolution of 800 x 480 Pixels, 5MP main camera and a VGA front snapper.
Cherry Mobile Amber 2 also flaunts being light weight in the new poster. It registers at 118 grams on the scale with its 1,400mAh battery already in place.
There’s 4GB of onboard storage with a microSD slot that can accommodate up to 32GB of additional storage space.

Hands on with the MyPhone Rio Craze
Android 4.4 Kitkat Smoothness!
I had a brief hands-on time with the MyPhone Rio Craze– a ₱1,999 dual core Android 4.4 Kitkat smartphone with colorful back covers. It was a yellow one with a glossy plastic back cover that makes it truly feel like a budget smartphone. I was worried that its 256MB of RAM will make it sluggish but navigating the user interface was actually quite snappy.
MyPhone Rio Craze - affordable Android Kitkat for you! |
MyPhone Rio Craze still has the same customized look of the Rio series. However, you can certainly feel that you have the little brother because of the small size.
The biggest concern with the MyPhone Rio Craze is its RAM and storage space. Checking the available RAM revealed that only 93MB is left for whatever app from the Playstore that you want to use.
The latest version of Facebook already consumes up to 80MB of RAM! That means after installing apps that run in the background, Rio Craze will certainly turn crazy with lags. That’s not a problem if you just want to use this for calling and texting.
The actual free space for your apps is just 83.49MB. Again, the Facebook app will just eat this away. Better yet, don’t install Facebook on your MyPhone Rio Craze! That's crazy!
I also checked the cameras of the Rio Craze. It has 1.3MP main camera and a VGA front snapper. As expected, both cameras perform badly and take low quality photos. Check this sample picture:
In order to enjoy the MyPhone Rio Craze, you can choose two ways in using it: (1) refrain from installing additional apps or (2) root it, remove bloatwares, apply performance tweaks and install Greenify.
You can also buy the MyPhone Rio Craze as a gift to someone who doesn't use too much apps or play games. Android 4.4 Kitkat still makes the Rio Craze run basic phone tasks smoothly and the colorful back covers add to its value.
How about you? Are you considering the MyPhone Rio Craze as a gift for someone? Share your thoughts in the comments.

MyPhone Rio Junior – Cheap Android 4.4 Kitkat Smartphone Spotted on MyPhone’s Website
If you search for the keyword ‘Rio’ on MyPhone’s official website, you’ll find two new variants of MyPhone Rio – the LTE and Junior.
MyPhone Rio Junior has the ‘lowest-end’ specs among the Rio variants – even lower than the MyPhone Rio Craze. Nevertheless, it’s still a dual core smartphone boasting an out of the box Android 4.4 Kitkat experience!
MyPhone Rio Junior is powered by a 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6571 processor coupled with a Mali-400 MP graphics processor. Just like the Rio Craze, these and its Android Kitkat OS will make it run basic functions like texting smoothly.
However, it only has 256MB of RAM and 512MB of internal storage. Installing additional apps and running background processes will be problematic.
MyPhone Rio Junior a slot for up to a 32GB microSD card and dual SIM support but it can only connect to 2G networks. If you want to browse the internet, you’re better off connecting to a Wi-Fi network.
As its name implies, MyPhone Rio Junior has the smallest screen among Rio variants – a 3.5-inch capacitive display with a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels only.
It also has a 1.3MP rear camera but lacks a front shooter. It doesn’t have a proximity and ambient light sensor too so the screen will stay on if you place it next to your ear to take a call.
The battery is listed as 1,300mAh but the price is nowhere to be found. Based on the slightly higher spec’d MyPhone Rio Craze, the Rio Junior might have an SRP around ₱1,500.

Asus Zenfone 5 Review - Perfect Premium Smartphone for the Budget Conscious
If you’re looking for a premium smartphone from a trusted brand at an affordable price– pick the Intel powered Asus Zenfone 5 for ₱6,495.
After unboxing the Zenfone 5, I was immediately amazed by the build quality, unique user interface and smooth operation. However, there are also a few issues with the Asus Zenfone 5.
I asked a few friends to hold the Zenfone 5 and tell me their impressions. The constant answer is that it feels premium and compact unlike the smartphones from the local brands.
One defining design detail of the Zenfones is the ‘rainbow pattern’ on the bottom part of the device and in the volume and power buttons. It looks like the effect on a CD because if you look closely, these are actually circular grooves.
The screen of the Zenfone 5 has a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 covering which makes it scratch resistant. A kitchen knife, coins and a bunch of keys didn’t leave any mark after several tests.
However, the bezels are slightly wide at around 4 mm– that’s the space between the screen to the edge of the device. The Zenfone 5 is also taller than other 5-inch phones that a small portion sticks out of my pocket.
Another issue with the design of the Zenfone 5 is its capacitive buttons. The back and menu button are misplaced. I am used to the back button on the right side of the device where I can tap it without my thumb reaching out. It takes getting used to this arrangement. Oh, those buttons don’t have a backlight too.
Let’s dive into the performance of the 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor of the Zenfone 5 with 2GB of RAM. Needless to say, there are no lags and hard core games run smoothly.
It got a score of 19,736 points on AnTuTu Benchmark with ‘Excellent’ score for both 2D and 3G graphics and ‘fluently support large mobile games’. Its PowerVR SGX 544MP graphics processor also got 60.3 frames per second on NemaMark2!
These test results were also supported by my brother’s hours of smooth experience in playing NBA2K14, Modern Combat 5 and Candy Crush Saga. Aside from games, Zenfone 5 also played fullHD movies without a hitch.
Asus boasts the PixelMaster camera technology built in the Zenfone 5 but while the sun is still up, I’m already amazed by the shots.
Asus Zenfone 5 has an 8MP main camera and a 2MP front snapper with 13 built-in shooting effects. I had to change the picture resolution from the default 6MP to the maximum though. Here are more sample photos taken with the Zenfone 5 in low light mode:
The low light mode is excellent at taking pictures in low light. However, it can only take up to 2MP pictures. I also find it difficult to use the Depth of Field effect because you have to keep the Zenfone 5 perfectly still in order to make it look good.
In most cases though, the Auto setting is produces that perfect picture with the HDR mode producing excellent shots of buildings and sceneries – perfect for documenting your escapades!
ZenUI is just a skin on top of Android but the folks at Asus did a very beautiful job with it. There are even tools built-in instead of having to download additional apps. It has a RAM booster, flashlight, reading mode and What’s Next that shows reminders on the lockscreen.
The ZenUI even has an Easy Mode that changes the phone’s layout to make it friendly for the seasoned ones and those who are not very familiar with the technology.
Texting is easy using the stock messaging app and the Asus keyboard. I had to turn off the autocorrect feature though because I usually text in Cebuano.
Calls are also a good experience. Sound quality is excellent using the phone’s speaker or the earphones. There’s even an option to record the call already built-in with the dialer.
Asus Zenfone 5 comes with two micro SIM slots both with 3G connectivity. However, mobile internet speed heavily relies on your location. While in the city, I was able to download a 50MB file in 10 minutes but it’s another story at home.
Wi-Fi connection is fast and reliable as well as Bluetooth. I had a problem with the GPS though with the Zenfone 5 taking too long to pin point my exact location.
Zenfone 5 has Miracast wireless display but I haven’t tested this feature yet. It also has the Asus PC Link app which mirrors your phone’s display on a computer screen via a microUSB connection.
USB OTG isn’t supported yet but the upcoming Android 4.4 Kitkat update is said to have this feature
Playing hard-core games shortens the battery life to just little more than 5 hours. Watching movies results in 7-8 hours of uptime while using Wi-Fi or 3G and GPS at the same time gives 6-7 hours of battery life.
When I leave the Zenfone 5 mostly idle though, it can stay without a re-charge for 18 to more than 20 hours. That's sending texts, making occasional calls and snapping a few pictures.
Re-charging the Zenfone 5’s battery from zero percent to full capacity took an average time of 2 hours and 20 minutes.
It’s also worth noting that Asus has a very good support for the Zenfone 5. My unit already received several software updates to fix reported bugs and add new features.
I’m also confident that they’ll be able to fix any problematic Asus Zenfone 5 in the different Asus service centers throughout the country.
The Asus Zenfone 5 is a great choice for an affordable smartphone at ₱6,500 with these features and a trusted brand.

Don’t be fooled by its name, Pebble has the potential to be a best seller with its mobile TV function, 3G HSPA+ access, Android Jelly Bean OS and a 3.5-inch display with In-Plane Switching technology.
Filipinos has always been fond of following their favorite TV programs but working or studying away from home can sometimes put you in a boarding house with no TV. These folks would be very excited with the Cherry Mobile Pebble.
There are other phones with mobile TV that are already available in the market. However, only a few runs on Android. Cherry Mobile Pebble has both which means you can enjoy Android games and apps too!
It’s even very surprising that Cherry Mobile has managed to give the Pebble an IPS display. Have you watched TV on a phone and notice that the colors wash out when it is tilted? That problem is solved by In-Plane Switching technology which is ubiquitous in more expensive smartphones.
3G HSPA+ mobile internet is a good additional feature too. However, I think the target market of the Cherry Mobile Pebble will rely more on Wi-Fi networks for browsing the net.
Cherry Mobile Pebble runs on a 1GHz dual core processor, has a microSD card slot, 2MP main camera and a VGA front camera. Check the local Cherry Mobile outlets in your area for availability.

Cherry Mobile Pulse Octa Core Phone for ₱6,499 with Kitkat OS and Dragontrail Display
It was only a matter of time for Cherry Mobile to match any offering from other local brands. The new Cherry Mobile Pulse is now officially the cheapest octa core smartphone in the country!
Aside from its octa core processor, Cherry Mobile Pulse also boasts a 5-inch HD IPS scratch resistant screen, Android 4.4 Kitkat out of the box and a 13MP main camera.
In a video posted by Cherry Mobile, the specs of the Cherry Mobile Pulse and a lesser spec’d Mini version were revealed. It runs on the usual 1.7GHz MT6592 chipset from MediaTek with a quad core Mali-450 MP4 graphics processor and 1GB of RAM.
The AnTuTu Benchmark score on the above photo suggests that the Cherry Mobile Pulse is a monster in terms of performance for it to hit 25,600!
One peculiar thing about the Cherry Mobile Pulse is its resemblance to the iPhone. Aside from the similar form factor, it also has a circular home button.
The Cherry Mobile Pulse also has a very competitive display with Dragontrail Glass to protect the 5-inch HD IPS panel from scratches.
In terms of photography, it has a 13MP autofocus main camera with an LED flash and a 5MP front camera. We can’t be sure if these use software interpolation but hoping that they are not.
Just like the Cherry Mobile Flare 3, Pulse has 8GB of onboard storage too. There’s also a slot for up to a 64GB microSD card and dual SIM support.
Its Android Kitkat OS also gives it the Double Tap to Wake feature and wireless connectivity like Wi-Fi, 3G HSPA+ access, GPS and Bluetooth are all present.
Cherry Mobile hasn’t announced when the Cherry Mobile Pulse and Pulse Mini will be available in stores yet. Follow us on Facebook for the latest on these devices.

Torque Droidz Trend 4-Inch Dual Core Smartphone with Kitkat Update Specs and Features
So you have two thousand Pesos and looking for the best smartphone to buy? Well, you might want to add ₱99 to that and consider the Torque Droidz Trend.
It’s already a 4-inch smartphone with a dual core processor, Jelly Bean OS but with an upcoming Android Kitkat update, 2MP front camera and five colors to choose from!
Of course, there are trade-offs so that this price can be achieved. First, it only has 256MB of RAM. Just like our hands on with the MyPhone Rio Craze, this will still let the Torque Droidz Trend operate basic tasks smoothly especially if it already runs on Android 4.4.2 Kitkat.
Another is the main camera which is only a 3MP snapper. Don’t expect good quality photos using it but the 2MP front camera is pretty average and can take care of your selfies.
Lastly, it doesn’t have 3G connectivity. However, you can still enjoy browsing the net or checking out Facebook via Wi-Fi.
Nevertheless, Torque Droidz Trend is still a good pick for ₱2,099. It’s now available in different Torque outlets nationwide.
